The Challenge

A large enterprise needed to migrate a 4TB Oracle 12c production database to 19c. Business requirements dictated a maximum offline window of 15 minutes. A standard migration estimated 20+ hours of downtime.

The Process

While the 4TB import ran on the target server, the SCN-Bridge connected to the source. Starting from the exact SCN of the snapshot, it processed over 1.2 million intermediate transactions in the background.

The Execution

The SCN-Bridge achieved <1-second lag within 4 hours. The final application switch and cutover took 4 minutes and 12 seconds.

CRITICAL

Silent Sync Hang

SQL cache keyed only by table name. When Debezium omitted NULL columns, the cached SQL had wrong placeholders — silently swallowed errors. No logs. No warnings. Just a hung job.

DATA INTEGRITY

Lost Decimal Scale

Debezium encodes NUMBER(10,2) as base64 without scale metadata. A value of 5000.00 was decoded as 500000 — violating CHECK constraints and silently corrupting financial data.

DATA INTEGRITY

Case-Sensitive Column Sort

SQL builders sorted UPPERCASED names, but parameter binding sorted original-case JSON keys. Java's case-sensitive sort caused wrong values in wrong columns — silent data corruption.

RELIABILITY

Cross-Table Batch Contamination

All tables shared one JDBC connection and transaction. One bad row in CUSTOMERS rolled back valid ADDRESSES rows. Multiple tables appeared hung together.

MEMORY LEAK

Infinite FK Retry Loop

FK retry queue created new entries with retryCount=0 on each failure. The original count was discarded. Max retries were never reached — eventual OutOfMemoryError.

I'm a senior Oracle DBA with deep expertise in database internals — LogMiner, supplemental logging, SCN mechanics, and Data Guard. I also build the Java/Flink pipelines that make zero-downtime migration possible.

That combination — understanding both the Oracle side and the streaming data engineering side — is what makes the SCN-Bridge reliable where other CDC solutions silently fail. Every bug fix in this tool came from a real production issue I diagnosed and resolved.
